Shrimp Cocktail

5/5

Shrimp cocktail is a classic and elegant appetizer that is perfect for parties, special occasions, or as a refreshing starter to a meal. It consists of cooked shrimp served with a tangy and flavorful cocktail sauce. This dish is not only delicious but also visually appealing, making it a popular choice for gatherings.

INGREDIENTS

  • Cooked and peeled shrimp (tail-on or tail-off)
  • Cocktail sauce:
    • 1/2 cup ketchup
    • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish (adjust to taste)
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
    • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • Dash of hot sauce (optional, for extra spiciness)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prepare the cocktail sauce by combining ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce (if using), salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Refrigerate the sauce until ready to use.

  2. If the shrimp is not cooked yet, bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Avoid overcooking as it can make the shrimp rubbery. Drain and rinse the shrimp with cold water to stop the cooking process.

  3. Once the shrimp is cooked and cooled, arrange them neatly on a serving platter or individual cocktail glasses.

  4. Serve the shrimp cocktail with the chilled cocktail sauce on the side.

  5. Optionally, garnish with lemon wedges, fresh herbs like parsley or dill, or a sprinkle of paprika for added visual appeal.

  6. Enjoy the shrimp cocktail by dipping the shrimp in the tangy cocktail sauce before eating.

TIPS

  1. Use fresh or frozen shrimp for the best taste and texture.
  2. You can use pre-cooked shrimp from the store if you want to save time, but make sure it is of good quality.
  3. Adjust the amount of horseradish and hot sauce in the cocktail sauce to suit your preference for spiciness.
  4. For a more substantial appetizer, serve the shrimp cocktail on a bed of shredded lettuce or mixed greens.
  5. This recipe can be easily multiplied to serve a larger number of guests.
  6. If you have any leftovers, store the shrimp and cocktail sauce separately in the refrigerator. The shrimp should be consumed within a day or two for the best quality.
