Ragi malt drink is a healthy, filling and wholesome porridge made with finger millet flour (ragi in India). This is a very good health drink choice for toddlers and kids, easy to make and so much better than store bought malt drinks. This is also known as ragi java and it is a very age old tradition south indian recipe that we serve to toddlers and kids breakfast or snacks. Making ragi malt takes only 5 minutes if you have finger millet flour handy. Here is how to make easy and best ragi malt at home.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tbsp ragi or finger millet flour sprouted or plain.
• 1/4 cup water.
• 3/4 cup water boiled, cooled a bit
• 2 tsp jaggery powder or sugar

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1 -

1. Take 2 tbsp ragi flour in a pan
2. Add 1/4 cup water and mix well without any lumps. This is the most important step for making smooth and lump free ragi malt.
3. Start cooking this in medium flame, while stirring continuously.
4. After 2 or 3 minutes the mixture will turn thick, glossy and good aroma wafting out. At this stage add jaggery or sugar.
5. Switch off the flame and add 3/4 cup boiled and colled milk. Mix well.
6. Serve ragi malt warm or hot.

NOTES -

1. As ragi or finger millet does not have any taste of its own, the savoury ragi malt tastes similar to buttermilk and the sweet one similar to a milk drink.
2. This method of making ragi malt helps you eat this wonderful millet in a very delectable manner.
3. Your kids will enjoy having this.
4. You can prepare cooked ragi and keep in the fridge. That way you can quickly make sweet or savory ragi malt when needed.
