Dal pakora Recipe
5/5
Dal Pakora is a popular Indian snack made with ground chana dal and a mix of spices. The soaked and ground dal is combined with onions, green chilies, and aromatic spices to create a flavorful batter. The pakoras are deep-fried until crispy and golden brown, resulting in a crunchy texture on the outside and a soft interior. Dal Pakoras are commonly served as an appetizer or evening snack and pair well with chutneys or sauces.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Oil for deep frying
INSTRUCTIONS
- Soak chana dal in water for 2-3 hours. Drain the water and rinse the dal well.
- Transfer the soaked dal to a blender or food processor. Grind it coarsely without adding any water. The texture should be slightly grainy.
- Transfer the ground dal to a mixing bowl. Add chopped onions, green chilies, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kadai over medium heat.
- Take a small portion of the dal mixture and shape it into a small round pakora using your hands. Make pakoras with the remaining mixture.
- Carefully drop the pakoras into the hot oil and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Fry them in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Once the pakoras are golden brown, remove them from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
- Serve the hot and crispy Dal Pakoras with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or tomato ketchup.
TIPS
- Soak the chana dal for a few hours to ensure it softens properly.
- Do not grind the dal to a smooth paste; a slightly coarse texture gives the pakoras a nice texture.
- Adjust the spice levels by adding more or fewer green chilies and spices according to your preference.
- Use fresh oil for frying to ensure the pakoras turn out crispy and not greasy.
- Serve the pakoras immediately for the best taste and texture.
- You can experiment with adding other ingredients like grated vegetables or herbs to the batter for additional flavor and texture.
