Cabbage Thoran is a traditional South Indian dish made with finely chopped or grated cabbage, cooked with coconut and spices. It is a simple and flavorful side dish that pairs well with rice or roti. The cabbage is sautéed with mustard seeds, urad dal, green chili, and curry leaves to enhance the flavors. Grated coconut is added towards the end, giving a rich and aromatic touch to the dish. Cabbage Thoran is a nutritious and delicious way to enjoy the goodness of cabbage.

INGREDIENTS

  • Cabbage: 1 small head, finely chopped or grated
  • Coconut: 1/2 cup, grated
  • Mustard seeds: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad dal (split black gram): 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves: a few
  • Green chili: 1, finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut oil: 1 tablespoon

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan or kadhai over medium heat.
  2. Add mustard seeds and urad dal. Let them splutter.
  3. Add curry leaves and green chili. Sauté for a minute.
  4. Add the grated cabbage to the pan and mix well.
  5. Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix again.
  6. Cover the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes until the cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add grated coconut to the pan and mix well.
  8. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the flavors are well combined and the coconut is slightly toasted.
  9. Remove from heat and serve hot.

TIPS

  • Finely chop or grate the cabbage for a uniform texture in the dish.
  • Adjust the spiciness by adding more or fewer green chilies according to your preference.
  • You can also add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering for additional flavor.
  • Be careful not to overcook the cabbage, as it can become mushy. Cook until it is just tender.
  • Freshly grated coconut adds a wonderful taste to the dish, but you can also use desiccated coconut if fresh coconut is not available.
  • Serve Cabbage Thoran as a side dish with steamed rice or as an accompaniment to roti or paratha.
