5/5

Aloo Matar Poha is a popular Indian breakfast dish made with flattened rice (poha), potatoes, and green peas. It is a flavorful and satisfying dish that combines the softness of poha with the crunch of potatoes and the sweetness of green peas. The spices add a subtle warmth and aroma to the dish, making it a perfect start to the day.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup flattened rice (poha)
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving
  • Oil for cooking

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Rinse the flattened rice (poha) under running water for a few seconds. Drain well and keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Let them crackle.
  3. Add chopped onions and green chilies to the pan. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add diced potatoes and green peas to the pan. Mix well and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the potatoes are partially cooked.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder (if using), cumin powder, and salt. Mix well to coat the vegetables evenly with the spices.
  6. Cover the pan and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the potatoes are fully cooked and tender.
  7. Add the rinsed flattened rice (poha) to the pan. Gently mix everything together, ensuring that the poha is well combined with the vegetables and spices.
  8. Cook for another 2-3 minutes on low heat until the poha is heated through.
  9. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  10. Serve hot Aloo Matar Poha with lemon wedges on the side.

TIPS

  • Use thick or medium-sized poha for best results. Avoid using thin poha as it may become mushy.
  • Rinse the poha gently under running water and allow it to drain well to avoid it becoming soggy.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your taste preferences. Add more or less chili powder and green chilies as per your spice tolerance.
  • You can add roasted peanuts or cashews for added crunch and flavor.
  • Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the Aloo Matar Poha just before serving for a tangy kick.
  • Serve the poha hot as it tends to become dry and lose its texture when it cools down.
